Can you give me a brief overview of what PAT testing involves?

As a landlord, can you explain to me about PAT testing?
If your appliance has a plug on it, you should have it tested. PAT testing involves a visual inspection to check each of your appliances appliance casing and flex for wear and damage. Besides this, the plugs are checked for correct wiring and fuse rating. After this, electrical tests are completed and a sticker will be put on to each of your appliances to show whether it has passed or failed. You will also be issued with a PAT testing certificate.

PAT testing can save lives
As an employer, it is not law that PAT testing be carried out, although law does state that the workplace must be electrically safe. Government guidelines state that PAT testing is the best way to guarantee electrical safety. It is important to understand that as an employer, if an accident were to occur due to a faulty unmaintained appliance, you could end up with a hefty fine or even imprisonment, unless you can prove that you have taken the proper steps to make sure it is safe. PAT testing is the most efficient way to ensure your appliances are safe.
As a landlord, you have an obligation to ensure that your appliances are tested and safe before a tenant moves into your property. You must also uphold regular maintenance of all your appliances in order to ensure that the safety of your tenant is not compromised. Once again, the most efficient and, in many cases cheapest way to ensure this, is to have your appliances regularly PAT tested.
As a factory owner/construction company owner, can you explain to me about PAT testing?
All portable appliances must be tested at periodic intervals to ensure their protection is adequate and that they are safe to use without causing harm to company employees. Due to the wide range of appliances in use in the work place, they require PAT testing at different intervals (please see table below for a guide). Because of the high risk nature of construction sites/factories and the use of heavy equipment, they should undergo PAT testing at regular intervals.
As a school/nursery owner, can you explain to me about PAT testing?
Does PAT testing affect my insurance at all?
Faulty appliances can cause fire, injury or in extreme cases, death. Obviously when working in an environment where children are present, it is essential that electric safety is maintained at all times. You must remember that during school/nursery hours, you are responsible for the well being of the children. If you ensure that you have a PAT testing engineer test your appliances regularly, you can rest assured that you are providing the safest possible environment, not only for the children but also any staff.
It is definitely worth bearing in mind that many insurance companies now require, as a part of your policy that you have your electrical appliances tested at regular intervals. You should also check your policy carefully as they may require you to have your equipment tested in order to use it on another site. The easiest way to ensure you are properly covered is to have your appliances tested at regular intervals.
